It’s a sad time on Rocky Top. Beloved baseball coach Tony Vitello has accepted the San Francisco Giants’ offer.
Tony Vitello made history as the first collegiate head coach to move directly to an MLB managerial position without any professional experience.
Tony will forever be a legend at the University of Tennessee. There’s a reason he skipped the minor leagues — his résumé with the Vols over eight years speaks for itself. Tony put Tennessee baseball on the map. He turned the program into a national powerhouse. Before Tony, you could get into a baseball game for free if you brought a canned good, and the stadium was empty. Now, Lindsey Nelson Stadium is undergoing a $105 million expansion to increase seating capacity — all because Tony built a program fans wanted to support.
A quick snapshot of Tony’s highlights:
- 52 Players Drafted
- 10 First-Round Picks
- 341 Wins
- 2 SEC Regular Season Titles
- 2 SEC Tournament Titles (2022, 2024)
- 5 Regional Berths (2021–2025)
- 3 College World Series Berths (2021, 2023, 2024)
- 1 National Championship (2024)
- 2024 Coach of the Year
So many questions
Yes, his baseball resume is just as attractive as his physical resume. Who wouldn’t want him? But I have so many questions. Money? Dreams? NIL? Development vs management?
Money
Let’s start with money. Tony was making $3.3 million a year plus benefits in a state with no income tax and one of the most affordable cities to live in. The Giants are paying him $10.5 million for a three-year contract- in a state with the highest income tax and the second-highest cost of living in the United States. It clearly wasn’t about the money, right? It can’t be, because this is a pay cut.
Living a Dream
I get it. I assume it’s every baseball coach’s dream to make it to the major leagues. Every other MLB coach has had to pay their dues in the minor leagues before becoming the head skipper. Tony’s success at Tennessee gave him the fast track to bypass the minors. This decision had to be based on fulfilling a dream, right?
NIL
NIL keeps coming up in the rumor mill. Did Athletic Director Danny White really give NIL funds to the Lady Vols instead of the baseball team? I need to know more — a lot more — about this. White has been phenomenal at Tennessee, but if it comes out that he fumbled the Tony Vitello deal, is this the end of the golden era for UT athletics?
Development
I’m no pro scout, shocker- I know. What I’ve observed from Tony’s time in Knoxville is that Tony’s magic lies in developing players. He makes stars shine. Tony develops players into becoming big leaguers while letting them be themselves. Big egos chasing big dreams. He coaches to their strengths and makes them great. I just feel like the college game is the perfect fit for Tony. Am I wrong? In the major leagues, these guys are already fully developed and just need to know if their name is on the line-up card.
Thank You, Tony!
Dang, this really sucks for the University of Tennessee. It was one heck of a ride, Coach. Congratulations on making it to the Show and living your dream. Tony will be reunited with former Vol players Drew Gilbert, Blade Tidwell, Gavin Killen, and Maui Ahuna — all now in the Giants organization.
As a Dodgers fan, I can’t root for the Giants… unless they’re playing the Padres.
