2020 has been a year of shit stirring panic attacks with too many unnecessary funerals. Six months of constant dramatic change that has crashed the economy and inflicted a second Civil War. Some changes have been great; other changes have simply crossed the line with cancel culture.
Cancel culture refers to the popular practice of withdrawing support for (canceling) public figures and companies after they have done or said something considered objectionable or offensive. Cancel culture is generally discussed as being performed on social media in the form of group shaming. (Thank you, Google for the definition.)
Peter King was once known for his Monday Morning Quarterback column. He is now with NBC Sports, but his main job is being a Twitter troll of word vomit and explosive negativity. Peter King is the Urban dictionary definition of a “Karen” (the entitled lady who demands to “speak to the manager” because her feelings are hurt, the world revolves around her and she is always right). While most of us were trying to enjoy a different kind of 4th of July in America, King was using his blue checkmark to tell the world how Nathan’s Famous Hotdog eating contest was a sin! “Never have. Never Will. Not the point. The fact is, ESPN celebrates the birthday of our country by airing a gluttonous, vomitous and grotesque event. Eating is not a sport. Competitive eating is a sin.”
King says a lot, a lot of single-minded hot air, but attacking the hotdog eating contest on the 4th of July is the definition of a LOSER! See, the great thing about America is that we still have some choices we can make on our own. All King had to do was CHANGE THE CHANNEL. But, no, King had to go full on Rambo with making sure the world knew how HE felt. Is he mad at ESPN for promoting eating as sport and airing it on the most star-spangled awesome day of the year? ESPN airs poker, how is poker a “sport” and is gambling not sinful? I’ll never understand why people watch poker on TV, but instead of crucifying it, I just change the channel. Is King going to attack the Spelling Bee next because it’s not a “sport”?
King crosses the line when it comes to my Washington Redskins. I was born into a Redskins family; the team was chosen for me and in life you have to deal the hand you were dealt. King’s encouragement of the Redskins to change the name and his refusal to call them by their team name is cute. A grumpy old white man who is so offended by honoring Native Americans that he has been chirping about it for years. If Native Americans are not offended by the name Redskins, then who the bleeeep is Pere King to be soooo offended?
This topic isn’t new. Every few years when the King’s of the world need something to bitch about, the Redskins are an easy target. If Native Americans were actually offended by the Redskins it would be because of the teams win/loss record (62/97) in Washington over the last decade. I’m all of five-foot nothing without heels and you don’t hear me crying on social media about how the ‘New York Giants’ name is offensive to people who have to scale the shelves in grocery stores to reach anything.
Why does angry Peter King feel like he has to lead the charge in changing the name of the Washington Redskins? Because he is the Karen of Cancel Culture who believes in feelings over facts.
The reality is that these Karen’s of Cancel Culture along with billionaire investment firms who are begging Nike, FedEx and PepsiCo to end their relationship with the Redskins unless the name is changed. When does this end? Will the Indians, Chiefs, Blackhawks, and Braves all change their names too? Didn’t the Cowboys kill Native Americans? Were the Vikings nice people? How many people have died from Hurricanes? What about people who are allergic to all types of cats and birds? Who still has nightmares because of Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs? I know I colored a lot in history class, but I’m pretty sure Yankees were from the north and they killed Southerners. Should I keep going about how every team can be offensive to someone?
Here are some facts: Pete King and the Karen’s of the world can bully The Redskins to change the name all they want. As a lifelong Redskins fan, they will always be the Washington Redskins. I won’t buy new name merch and FedEx field has been empty for years, so no one will see the new name at the stadium. And to the idiot who said the new name will welcome a new fanbase. (Hold on while I try to stop laughing.) No new fans are coming because of a name change. Fans come from deeply rooted families who have always been fans, not because of a name change. Change the name all you want, but just know that it will change nothing. #HTTR
