It’s Hard To Be A Fan

It’s hard to be a Redskins fan. It’s really hard.

We don’t even have a real team name. I guess every other mascot, animal, thing, person is offended by being associated with the name “Washington”. I don’t blame them. We are a mess on and off the field so we are left nameless. But I only know “Redskins” as a logo of pride and heritage to honor Native Americans. The Washington Redskins Football Team, whatever we are called these days, it doesn’t matter, the name never mattered. All that mattered is the product on the field. And the product on the field still sucks!

Sunday’s Battle of the Beltways home game against the Baltimore Ravens started by tugging at your emotions. Head Coach Ron Rivera was emotional when he saw an entire section of fan cardboard cutouts that were all there to support him. The section was filled with 450 coaches, players and family members who have supported and impacted Rivera’s life while he is currently battling cancer. His brother passed away in 2015 from pancreatic cancer and that cardboard cutout touched him the most.

We know what is going on with the Coach, but does anyone know what is going on with kicker Dustin Hopkins? He has missed two kicks through four games this year with a 66.67 percentage of kicks that are good. (In his last five seasons, he averaged 85.11%.) For the last five years, Washington fans never had to worry about kicking from Hopkins or the punter, Tress Way. But in true 2020 fashion, we can’t count on anything. Keep your head up Hop, we need you!

One person who still needs a lot of work, QB Dwayne Haskins. Haskins threw for a career high 314 yards, but don’t let that fool you. He’s still so scared to really throw the ball. He acts like he is on the cover of Madden, but he plays like playing in middle school co-ed gym class. How is it possible to have a 17-play drive end with zero points because you can’t make a short five-yard pass to Isaiah Wright on 4th & goal? Social distancing rules do not apply in the Red Zone! I guess it’s hard to throw touchdowns when you’re always getting sacked. Did Rivera trust Haskins more than Hopkins? Is the narrative now highlighting that it is time to bring in the backup? When people in Washington says we need change, we are talking about the quarter back position!

It’s for the best that FedEx Field didn’t allow fans to attend home games this year because the sound of the boooo’s would have broken a decibel level. Just kidding, if fans were really allowed in FedEx field they would have all been Ravens fans anyway. The 31-17 loss to the Ravens is a little inflated. With 4:24 left in the 4th, Baltimore put in the backups and thanks to an RGIII interception. Washington was able to go from 10 points to 17 points late in the game. Even Raven fans would have booed RGIII.

A positive take away from the game was seeing Kendal Fuller back in the burgundy and gold (those are still the colors, right?) His two picks were the only highlights on defense. Rookie running back but sometimes a receiver, Antonio Gibson had a spark or two but nothing that has made me say wow. Against Arizona, he was -3 in receiving and fumbled against Cleveland, so maybe I should be impressed with 82 receiving yards and 46 rushing yards…. Na, he’s a rookie and he has to fill Adrian Peterson’s shoes and he still has a lot of work to do.

Typical Washington; take away the name, fire the coaches, fire the GM, get rid of most of the roster, not allow fans at games and you would think all these changes would help. It’s the same ole shit show. Through week four and we are 1-3. They should just announce the new logo to be the poop emoji.

Did I mention how hard it is to be a fan of the Washington Redskins Football Team?

Well said! Dan Snyder is the primary problem which is why no combination of fixes have ever worked. We managed to get rid of every great coach who has moved on to do better things elsewhere! Most importantly offensive geniuses.
