Alabama is not number one in the SEC West and Kentucky is tied with Georgia for first in the SEC East. Yep, that’s not a type-o, Kentucky is tied for first in the SEC East. But before the Wildcats get too crazy, they should remember the rest of the SEC East is not that good right now and there’s still half the season left.
The real shocker is the state of Alabama. After six weeks of collegiate matchups, both Auburn and Alabama are 5-1 with the latest AP poll ranking Auburn at #6 in the country followed by Alabama at #7. Most states would be thrilled to have both of their premier universities ranked, much less ranked in the top10. But in the state of Alabama the expectation has become to be ranked number one.
Historically, the last five Iron Bowl’s, (Alabama vs. Auburn) have determined the winner of the SEC West and who will play for the BCS National Championship. Alabama has won three BCS National Championships in the last five years. Auburn has made two BCS Championship appearances winning one National championship.
This years Iron Bowl will be played on November 29th, but there’s another interstate rivalry game that day that is getting all the attention in college football. One of the best pageantries of Saturday’s in the south will feature the state of Mississippi and the tenth longest uninterrupted series in football; the Egg Bowl. Right now, on November 29th all eyes are on #1 Mississippi State Bulldogs vs. #3 Ole Miss Rebels.
In the 78 years of the AP poll’s history, The Mississippi State Bulldogs are the first team to go from being unranked to number one in just five weeks.
To stay undefeated, both Mississippi teams have to beat Auburn and Ole Miss has to beat a young Tennessee team this Saturday. If Mississippi State can play a full game against Alabama, the Bulldogs should be able to expose the Tides lack of ability to play the last 15 minutes of the game and remain undefeated. (The Crimson Tide have been outscored 40-14 in the last 15 minutes against ranked teams.) Is the Nick Saban dynasty over in Alabama? HA, the curse of Lane Kiffin has hit Tuscaloosa! Sorry, I’m not sorry.
The SEC East showed college football last Saturday that Georgia head coach Mark Richt might be around for another season in Athens. This was the first game without (former) Heisman frontrunner, Todd Gurley who is suspended indefinitely. There is an NCAA investigation to determine if Gurley was given money for autographs and other football collectables with his John Hancock. Gurley who? And just when college football counted the Dawgs out of being a contender without Gurley, Georgia shut out Missouri 34-0 in Columbia, MO! Georgia QB Hutson Mason completed 22 of 28 passes to gain 156 yards with 1 TD.
Saturday’s in south wouldn’t be the same without College GameDay and the entertainment provided by the homemade signs in the background of the broadcast from the students. My favorite College GameDay sign so far goes to Mississippi State for their witty humor last Saturday towards the wardrobe of Auburn’s head coach, Gus Malzahn.
