The past four days have been historic in the world of sports! On Thursday, the Washington Capitals won the NHL Stanley Cup. On Friday, the Golden State Warriors swept the Cavs. On Saturday, Justify won the Triple Crown and on Sunday, Dustin Johnson won the FedEx/St. Jude Classic and got back to being the number one golfer in the world.
The Washington Capitals beat the Los Vegas Golden Knights 4-3 in game five of the Stanley Cup Finals and Alex Ovechkin has not stopped celebrating! The burden of not winning the Stanley Cup was lifted from one of the greatest hockey players in the league. The DC sports curse was lifted and the Nation’s Capital cried tears of joy as they celebrated the special moment. (Funny, how DC sports fans didn’t ‘riot’, they just drank a lot of booze and hugged strangers.)
This was the first season for the Knights and no team has ever won in their inaugural season since 1950. (The Cleveland Browns won the NFL in1950, The Minneapolis Lakers won the NBA in 1948-49 and the Baltimore Bullets won the NBA in 1947-48 season.) The Washington Capitals played in their second Stanley Cup Finals. Their first time they were playing for the Cup, they were swept by the Detroit Red Wings in 1998. Finally, DC sports has something to cheer about!
One word to describe the NBA finals on Friday; Brooms! The Golden State Warriors swept LeBron James and Cleveland Cavaliers. This was LBJ’s eighth straight, EIGHTH straight NBA Finals. Michael Jordan once made the NBA playoffs nine years in a row. Curry has now won three NBA Championships in four years. Both Curry and LBJ are tied with three rings each. This was the fourth straight year that Curry and LBJ met in the finals. Will there be a 5th year? The world of sports is pretty sure that LBJ will not be in a Cavs jersey next season. The only thing we know for sure is that he will go to a team where he has help. He will not be bringing JR Smith with him.
For the 13th time in history we have a new Triple Crown winner; Justify! This is the second time in four years we have had a Triple Crown. The Bob Baffert trained horse won the mile and a half Belmont Stakes on Saturday in New York. The three-year-old colt, Justify, only began racing this year. He remains undefeated and has earned $3.8 million! The question now is will Justify continue to race this year and earn more millions or just rest until next Spring for mating season? The last Triple Crown winner, American Pharoah, earned over $30 million by selling his sire. I’d say retire undefeated and spread your genes to live a life with Fiji water and organic carrots.
Sunday was a great day for golf and an even better day for Dustin Johnson! DJ ended the FedEx/St. Jude Classic with a walk-off birdie to shoot 19 under and $1.2 million dollars richer. This wasn’t one of the golf majors, but DJ winning the week before the U.S. Open in Southampton, NY put him back on top as the number one golfer in the world. He has his swag back! DJ won the U.S. Open in 2016 and he will be the one to watch this weekend. GO DJ!
