On Sunday, the top four teams were announced for the College Football Playoff. The 13-0 Michigan Wolverines (Big10), the 13-0 Washington Huskies (Pac-12), the 12-1 Texas Longhorns (Big12), and the 12-1 Alabama Crimson Tide (SEC) made the top four. And the internet lost their mind over the 13-0 Florida State Seminoles being left out of the College Football Playoff. Personally, I thought the 12-1 Georgia Dawgs are the ones that should have been in the top r, but let’s talk about who didn’t make the top four.

Florida State

Social media exploded when Alabama was selected over Florida State. College Football Playoff committee chair Boo Corrigan explained why FSU was left out of the top four on ESPN after the announcement. Corrigan said “Florida State is a different team than they were through the first 11 weeks. An incredible season. But as you look at who they are as a team, right now, without Jordan Travis, without the offensive dynamic that he brings to it, they are a different team.” Florida State’s star QB, Jordan Travis is out for the season with a broken leg. FSU beat Louisville 16-6 with their third string QB to win the ACC Championship. “All the CFP committee said was the ACC is irrelevant”- Byron St.Clair.

Just listen to Sports Illustrated 2023 Sportsperson of the Year, Coach Deion Sanders, talk about the CFP committee selection. (Unlike other SI stories, this content was not AI generated.) For those who are new to college football, Coach Prime played at Florida State.

They Got It Wrong, Again!

What I don’t understand is why is no one questioning Texas as 12-1? How can anyone look at the Florida State at #5 and Georgia at #6 and think, yea, that makes sense? Florida State over Georgia only makes sense in Biden economics. The CFP committee still got the rankings wrong. What if football was a best of three series? (Beka, this is when teams play more than once. In a best of three, you can lose one game and still win the series. Mom, I assume I didn’t have to explain it to you.) There is no way this FSU team without Jordan Travis stays undefeated in any rematch situation.

Georgia will play Florida State in the Orange Bowl on December 30th in Miami. Vegas has Georgia as -14 over FSU. Double digits! That’s Vegas saying the Dawgs got screwed.

Still No FSU

Let’s look at another scenario. With Texas as the #3 seed, if Georgia would have beat Bama in the SEC Championship, then Georgia would have been the #1 seed and Texas would have been the #4 seed. Basically saying, still no FSU.

If FSU fans want to be mad at anyone, take all that anger out on Auburn. If Auburn could have stopped 4th and THIRTYONE, then they could have eliminated Bama from being considered in the top four. Or blame TCU for their 65-7 beatdown from Georgia in the National Championship game.

Remember

It’s important to remember that the CFP selection committee is made of 13 athletic directors, former coaches, and players. They rank the teams based on their play on the field while considering conference championships, strength of schedule, head-to-head competition, and comparative outcomes of common opponents. Remember, it’s not just wins and losses.

At the end of the day, the committee has to pick the BEST four teams. Even with FSU having a 13-0 record, they still were not one of the BEST four teams in college football.
