It’s not the 4th of July without Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog eating contest in Coney Island, NY and American hero, Joey Chestnut.

Joey Chestnut won his 15th Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Championship on Monday. Chestnut now holds the record for the most Championship Titles in a Single Sports Event. (Rafael Nadal has 14 French Open titles.) No other competitive eater has more than seven titles.

There is no amount of THC that could make the thought of eating 63 hot dogs appealing to me. Much less, eating 63 hot dogs and buns in ten minutes without having a reversal of fortune. And only eating 63 hot dogs was considered a down year for Chestnut. This year may have been his fewest since 2015, however only two other competitive eaters have taken down 63 hot dogs in the history of the event (Kobayashi (twice) and Cincotti).

Legend

What was not shown on live TV was the most patriotic moment in the history of the hot dog eating contest. Chestnut choked out a protestor in the middle of the ten-minute contest and quickly went back to dominating the competition all while wearing a walking boot for a ruptured tendon in his leg. He is a Legend!

The protester was holding a sign reading “Expose Smithfield Death Star” while wearing a Darth Vader mask. We can only assume that the he was referring to the Smithfield meat processing company in Smithfield, VA and that “Death Star” was a Star Wars reference. (I’ve never watched any of Star Wars series so I only know Luke has a father.) The protester was arrested and most likely needs to see a chiropractor soon.

Total Domination

I remember listening to Colin Cowherd years ago after Chestnut won and he said that no one would remember Joey Chestnut’s name the next year. Here we are all a decade later and Joey Chestnut is still a household name. Since Chestnut started in 2005, he has eaten 1,152 hot dogs and buns. He holds all of the top-10 records for Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest. And he dominated this year’s field by 20 hot dogs and it wasn’t even close to his personal best (76 hot dogs in 2021). Talk about star spangled awesome (and disgusting)!

If you think you got what it takes to compete with Joey Chestnut for the Mustard Belt and other professional eaters, here is list of other major league eating records. (Chestnut holds the record for 121 Twinkies in six minutes!) How is it possible to eat like this?
