The NFC East, Yikes!

The Washington Football Team hosted division rivalry, the New York Giants, on Sunday afternoon. The NFC East is the only division where all four teams have successfully socially distanced themselves from the win column. At this point, the NFL should just exclude the entire NFC East from playoffs.

Only 3,000 fans were allowed in FedEx field, but you would have never known it because the stadium still looked like they had 30 fans. The First Ladies of Washington (the former Redskinettes/cheerleaders) were nowhere to be seen either. I’m used to seeing an empty FedEx field, it’s the chaos in the Nation’s Capital on and off the field that has me shaking my head.

You would have never known that Washington was coming off of a bye week. The first half of Sunday’s game looked a lot like the previous week in Washington; pure embarrassment. Two of the sorriest looking teams in the NFC East entered the game with a combined 3-12 (NYG 1-7 and WAS 2-5. New York’s only win was against Washington in week 6.) This is the worst division in NFL history! (I didn’t fact check that stat because I’ve learned you can say it is a fact as long as it fits your agenda.) I’m confident this is absolutely the most embarrassing division to ever play football, ever!

Mistakes are how a shitty team can lose to the shitty-er team. It was so fitting that the leading stat was the same stat major news outlets have been spewing all week; turnovers, fumbles, interceptions, and penalties. Yes, shit can get shitty-er.

Was Tom Brady’s ball boy in charge of the footballs? No one could hold on to the ball. Kyle Allen took a sack by Giants safety, Jabrill Peppers, with 1:08 left in the first half. Roughing the passer was called and Washington had to call in Alex Smith to take over while Kyle Allen was carted off the field. (Another broken bone in the leg/foot region for Washington. Why do these injuries keep happening??) The following 2nd and 3rd plays of that drive resulted in a false start penalty from Washington’s, Brandon Scherff and then offensive holding on Logan Thomas. Pretty sure they lead the league in penalties too. (Again, I didn’t fact check, but it supports my opinion.) The second half ended in pure Washington 2020 fashion. The Giants lead 20-3.

Washington came out of half time, 728 days since Alex Smith was injured. Smith threw his first TD pass to Terry McLaurin. The rest of the second half wasn’t pretty, but there were sparks of hope. Kyle Allen was 5/7 for 62 yards the first half. Alex Smith was 24/32 for a career high of 325 yards, 1 TD and 3 interceptions the second half. With Smith in the pocket, you feel better about your chances because he can move the ball down the field. It doesn’t always mean that he will get the ball into the end zone or that it won’t end up in the others teams hands, but Alex Smith gives you a better chance and he can move the ball.

The last 2:27 minutes of the game were so 2020, it hurt. With the Giants leading 23-20 on 3&10 for Washington, Smith threw across his body to the middle of the field while falling back off of his balance. It was picked off by NYG Peppers. Washington’s defense made the Giants go three and out giving the ball back to Washington with 1:29 left. On 2nd and 6 Washington recorded their 5th turnover of the game and their 5th straight loss to the Giants. The 2-6 Washington Football team is still second in the division behind the Eagles. (The bye week skews a loss for both Philadelphia and Washington making them look better.) The only sure thing we know about 2020 is that whoever wins NFC East will not have a lot to celebrate.
